Famous for its juice, Chegworth Farm has opened a shop in the unlikely location of Kensington Church Street

In the wake of several surprising launches in Kensington Church Street comes the new Chegworth Farm shop. Yet another new shop that is neither an estate agent nor a bureau de change, this is a proper shop that’s set to be of enormous everyday value to residents. It’s a shop that makes farmers’ market fare available on a daily basis, as well as stocking the entire and vast range of award-winning Chegworth Farm juices.
Owner David Deme ran a greengrocers and a string of newsagents in west London until he and his wife decided to move out of town and run a farm in Kent instead. This was 25 years ago and now their farm is a serious industry producing what is probably the country’s favourite juice, sold in distinctive litre bottles at farmers’ markets and health food stores all over the country in such tasty combinations as apple and rhubarb, apple and beetroot and bramley and cox, among countless others. The juice business really took off at Borough Market about 10 years ago and from there Deme got involved with the farmers’ markets. Chegworth juice is expensively produced using exclusively fresh fruit, no concentrate and no flavourings, and local fans include Alastair Little and Sally Clarke, both of whom stock it in their stores.
“So we thought the next step was a shop,” says David.”Farmers markets are just one day and we wanted to make all the produce available throughout the week.” The new shop is essentially a non-stop farmers’ market, selling all the produce that visitors to the weekend events will be familiar with. Isle of Wight tomatoes, Wiltshire bacon, bread from Flourish, raspberries that were picked yesterday, farm yoghurt and milk, as well as Taywell ice cream (as seen on The Apprentice – it sells out daily). There’s a wide selection of fruit and vegetables and soon there’s set to be a range of healthy ready meals too, ready to pick up on your way home. What a brilliant addition to the area – welcome Chegworth. l
